Dreaming big for a future in media

Dreaming Big 2019 trainee Shadrach Sales, of Cairns, joined My Pathway’s Disability Employment Services (DES) Program with a dream to work in media production.

Since commencing a National Joblink skills training program in September 2018 – which enables local, indigenous youth to gain employment ready skills – Shadrach has been supported by My Pathway to be awarded a film and media traineeship.

Completing a Certificate I in Business through Dreaming Big – funded by the Queensland State Government under ‘Skilling Queenslanders for Work’, as part of the Employability Skills Training program – Shadrach was accepted into the traineeship with NJL Productions.

In line with his dream, Shadrach will have the opportunity to build on his skills and learn the fundamentals of film making, editing, script writing, camera operations, storyboarding and participating in planning meetings.

As part of the NJL Production Crew, Shadrach is excited to be working with community groups, providing event support for a youth centre in Cairns, and will manage various other events.

The Dreaming Big 2019 trainees will also be involved in creating a special My Journey exhibition, for the Cairns Museum and will launch their documentary in July, during NAIDOC week. “My colleagues are wonderful to work with and we make a great team,” said Shadrach.

Signing no barrier

Shadrach has profound hearing loss in both ears and his mode of communication is Sign Language, or signing.

My Pathway was able to arrange a Sign Language Interpreter to attend the interview with Shadrach, for the traineeship position with NJL – to ensure that his sensory communication was not a barrier at the time of the interview.

Shadrach shined at this interview and, as a result, was successful in obtaining the position with NJL commencing employment in March 2019.

“I feel proud to have full time work and feel good doing a job I love,” Shadrach said of his film and media training opportunity.

My Pathway is liaising closely with Job Access – under the Employment Assistance Fund –  to ensure that Shadrach has the opportunity to obtain much needed speech communication technology equipment to communicate effectively with his team members, any modifications required for his safety in the workplace, and employee awareness training for his colleagues.

My Pathway is proud of Shadrach, and his achievements, and will continue to support him and his employer throughout his employment journey with National Joblink as a Trainee Crew Member.
